It’s nighttime, and a young woman with a strong Nigerian accent stands on a roadside in a quiet Italian suburb. After an awkward encounter with a potential client, she has an impromptu conversation with a stranger, to whom she tells the story of how she was sold into a life of forced prostitution in a foreign land. Currently, there are approximately 6.3 million victims of sex trafficking worldwide. Most are female, and 1.7 million are under the age of 18. Specifically, the sex trafficking of Nigerian women and girls in Italy is a crisis that has persisted for over three decades, having destroyed tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of lives. Unfortunately, the stories you’ll find while researching these cases are almost always the same. The general formula that I discovered in victim testimonies, time and time again, while conducting my own research, is replicated in this script.
